In the last few months Highland Way has been slowly evolving. Heloise and Rich have moved onto other musical projects while we've been joined by Ned Giblin and Freddy Faith. We will miss Heloise and Rich and wish them success in their various projects.

Freddy started playing intermittently with us about a year ago. It is his percussion that you hear in our version of Caledonia.

Paul and myself have been joining Ned here and there for the last 6 years. So it was no surprise when we asked him to join us.

Both Ned and Freddy have brought a new energy to the band. Ned is a native Irishman, a vocalist who plays a host of traditional instruments, including, mandolin, whistle, bodhran, and guitar. Freddy is an energetic and animated drummer and percussionist. We are ready to shake up audiences around the country. Look out for us in a town near you.

Farewell to Good Friends

Heloise and Richie have officially left Highland Way. We wish them the best in their other musical endeavors.

The band now consists of Brian Caldwell, Ned Giblin, Paul Castellanos, and Freddy Faith.

Look for us at festivals and theaters next year. If any other shows come up before then, we'll be sure to let you all know.

Ford and the Vikings

It's the first week of Fall, weather in Southern California is starting to cool down (just a bit) at last, and we had a fantastic show in L.A.!

Thanks to everyone who came out to support us at the Ford Amphitheatre in Los Angeles. It was a good night, and a lot of fun. We introduced our newest band member, Freddy Faith, on the drums. Want to meet Freddy and welcome him to the Highland Way family? Come on out to the Viking Festival this weekend in Vista, CA.

September 26th, from 11am to 8pm and September 27th, from 11am to 4pm

$7 one day ticket -- $11 two day pass -- 12 & under FREE!

We take the stage four times on Saturday and twice on Sunday. And for those in-between times, check out the fantastic Viking games, food, contests (fish flinging and axe throwing, anyone?), and other entertainment. Kids can even take in a free accordion lesson while you're there.

So come out to Norway Hall in Vista (click here for directions) this weekend. Enjoy the good weather, good food, good music, and learn a little something about the Vikings. See you there!

2009 marks the 250th anniversary of Robert Burns' birth (you all know who he is, yes?). In celebration of his accomplishments and his contributions to the world, Scotland is throwing a yearlong anniversary party! All Scots -- whether you're 100% or 1% -- are encouraged to fly home sometime during this year to walk once more among the lovely green hills of our homeland. For those who can't make it, we've put together a video just for you:

Tomorrow night (and every Sunday night), we have Brian and Paul playing as the Clachan Boys at R O'Sullivan's in Escondido, CA from 5-8pm; 118 East Grand Ave. It's Family Night - bring the kids! R O'Sullivan's serves great food and has just about the friendliest wait staff around. And there's never a dull moment when the Boys are in the house!

Ask Brian about the band's latest release, Caledonia to California. He'll surely be glad to provide you with a copy... in exchange for some greenback, of course! Autographs on the CD are free of charge. :)

The latter part of 2008 was exciting, with gigs in Arizona and Washington as well as our usual haunts here in California. We brought out a brand new CD: Caledonia to California, of which we're quite proud, and we celebrated a milestone of our first year of multi-state performances. How could it get any better, you ask...?

We're starting off the year with a BANG as we play on the Queen Mary in Long Beach on February 14-15 for the Scottish Festival, joining the likes of Alex Beaton, Men of Worth, Eric Reigler and Bad Haggis, and Sligo Rags on this historic ship for a weekend of true Scottish celebration!

Sharing the 'Strathclyde Stage' with the Wicked Tinkers and Bad Haggis, this will be a fantastic event, complete with pipe bands, heavy athletics, great Scottish food, shopping, sheep dog trials, and of course incredible music.

Well, it's been a crazy busy March with lots of FUN gigs. St. Patrick's Day is behind us now and we can take a little bit of a breather to relax and work on music before the Games season begins anew for us in May. Here are a few pictures from St. Patrick's Day, for your viewing pleasure. :)

Peaches, Cacti, and Apples...

What do those three items have in common.................? Well now they have... HIGHLAND WAY!

2008 has just begun and already it's off to an exciting start. In addition to our beloved gigs in SoCal, we'll be playing at festivals and highland games in Georgia, Arizona, and Washington!

Our first stop is the beautiful, historic town of Dahlonega, Georgia on March 7-9 for their first-ever Celtic Music Festival. We'll play a concert on Saturday night at the Holly Theater (tickets are $30 per person... hurry before they're sold out!) and lead a couple of fun workshops at the festival during the day. Check out their website at Dahlonega Celtic Music Festiva l to see all the great events they have planned! You will not want to miss the Celtic workshops that are being offered throughout the weekend. Highland Way is leading two of them: Sounds of Scotland and The Dragon and the Fir Darrigs. Sounds of Scotland is a 45-minute concert that has the band sharing some pretty cool info on Scottish traditions and music. The Dragon and the Fir Darrigs is a 45-minute workshop featuring Heloise and Brian as they read aloud the Wee Celtic Tales story about Nessie, complete with musical accompaniment and a singalong!

Check back for details and announcements about Arizona and Washington, both of which are coming up in July!

With the new year has come a new change: Pete Connolly is leaving the band. He may still play the occasional gig with us, but for the most part we're back to a four-person group. We wish Pete all the best in his musical endeavors and look forward to the times when he can make music with us.

A huge THANK YOU to Pete for all his hard work and dedication to Highland Way over the past year. To all our friends and fans, have no fear -- we're still going as strong as ever. Keep checking back to see where we're playing next!

Wee Celtic Tales

Did you know that Heloise is a very talented artist? She has partnered with children's educator and longtime friend June Clark Heinz (yes, that last name should sound familiar... June is Rich's lovely wife!) to create a series of children's books called Wee Celtic Tales.

The first two books in the series are Shane and the Fir Darrigs and The Dragon and the Fir Darrigs. Shane and the Fir Darrigs is about a young boy who doesn't like to share his toys with his little brother. He makes a wish and... well, you'll just have to read it to find out what happens! The Dragon and the Fir Darrigs is a heart-warming story about Nessie, Scotland's beloved Loch Ness monster.

Both books are well-written and beautifully illustrated, and a great addition to any child's library. Both are also now available with an audio CD so that children can hear the stories told in a traditional Scottish brogue (and yes, that would be Brian's voice you hear on the CD).

Back in the Saddle

What a week! A few of the band members capped it off with a rousing night at R. O'Sullivan's Irish Pub in Escondido. Paul and Brian play there every Sunday night as the Clachan Boys, and this time they were joined by Heloise with her beautiful harmonies. It was a fantastic evening with lots of music, laughter, and audience participation. Just what the doctor ordered!

Now that things are beginning to return to normal for our band members and for Southern California, we thought this might be a good time to repost this:

Good News

We have some good news! Brian's house has survived!! There is damage to outdoor steps and the garage door and other exterior items, but the main house is standing. Definitely lots of clean up and repair to be done here... BUT we are all very thankful that the house has not been destroyed as previously thought. We are very grateful to the brave men and women who are working so hard to save as many homes as they can wherever the fires are.

Thank you to everyone who has offered help and sent up good thoughts and prayers for a positive outcome to this situation. Your thoughtfulness is very much appreciated!

Hoping that others will also have good news when they are allowed to return to their homes, and sending up lots of good thoughts for the emergency personnel who are still working so very hard to fight the flames throughout southern California.

The band remains safely out of harm's way this evening (morning...?). Yes, some have been evacuated but everyone is fine. Thank you again for all your support. We hope that you and your loved ones are all safe and sound as well.

Thank you to everyone for your care and good wishes for band members during this fire emergency in San Diego county. We are safe, some awaiting evacuation.

Our thoughts are with those who are battling the flames, and with everyone who is affected in any way.
